LITTLE ROCK – December 2021 has arrived, and Arkansas is celebrating Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) December 6 through December 12 in recognition of Dr. Grace Hopper’s birthday and Dr. Raye Montague’s contributions to computing.

Governor Asa Hutchinson formally designated, via proclamation, next week as Computer Science Education Week in Arkansas. 

The Arkansas State Board of Education (SBE) also recognized the significance of the week by adopting a CSEdWeek resolution during its November 2021 meeting.

Over the next week, the state encourages Arkansas schools, after-school organizations, civic organizations, and industries to promote computer science education. 

One way schools can do this is to encourage their students to join over one-billion people who have completed the Hour-of-Code HERE. If students have already completed the Hour-of-Code activities, many additional options can be found HERE.  

The #CSforAR / #ARKidsCanCode team with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Emerging Analytics Center will be kicking off the student activities with a Community Coding Day on Saturday, December 4, 2021. 

At the UA Little Rock campus, there will be a free hands-on event for families and K-12 students to explore various CS activities. There will be an opportunity to code with devices such as Micro:Bits, Circuit Playground, Raspberry Pi, and different codable “critters.” There will also be an opportunity to interact with programmable robots, virtual and augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. Find more information HERE.
